Government publishes consultation on opportunities for growth through the reuse of existing buildings

The Government has issued a consultation seeking views on, among other things:

  •     creating permitted development rights allowing change of use from agricultural buildings to “low impact” business uses supporting rural growth.  It has suggested those uses might be workshops, offices, storage, food processing, cafes and leisure;
  •     increasing the permitted development threshold for change of use from class B1 (business and office use) to class B8 (warehouse), and from class B2 (industrial) to B1 and B8; and
  •     allowing change of use from class C1 (hotels) to C3 (dwelling houses) without requiring planning permission.

The closing date for responses is 11 September 2012.
