Michael qualified in 2004 and since then has practised as a dispute resolution lawyer in private practice and in-house. Michael joined the dispute resolution team at Stevens & Bolton as a Managing Associate in May 2019.
In private practice (previously at Kennedys LLP and, more recently, at Bird & Bird LLP) Michael has worked with clients in various sectors and of various sizes in managing their contentious matters, and in doing so provides commercial strategic advice with the aim of resolving disputes as quickly and cost-effectively as possible.
Having previously headed up the Dispute Resolution team at BAE Systems plc, Michael’s particular area of interest and specialism is managing disputes in the aerospace and defence sector, as well as the engineering and manufacturing industries more widely. This experience includes acting on behalf of automotive businesses, particularly component manufacturers (e.g. vehicle seating, bearings, air-conditioning systems) in relation to supply chain and product liability issues. Michael co-heads the firm’s automotive sector.
It is particularly as a result of this in-house experience that Michael is quickly able to understand the commercial pressures and needs of clients (both internal and external), and understands what clients require from their legal team. Where a dispute cannot be resolved without recourse to formal proceedings, Michael has managed most types of dispute resolution process including arbitration (domestic and international), litigation, adjudication, expert determination as well as most forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution.
