IP strategy at the research stage: the UKIPO’s “Knowledge Asset Management” hub

The UKIPO has recently launched a new "Knowledge Asset Management" (KAM) hub, designed to help research institutions and businesses identify, manage and protect their intellectual property more effectively.

Identifying and protecting IP in the research sphere is a crucial stage in the journey towards potential spin-out and commercialisation. New resources, now easily accessible through the KAM hub, bring together:

  1. Strategy-focused guidance and practical advice to help research organisations consider and implement a cohesive IP strategy.
  2. Patent analytics and intellectual property due diligence tools to support the assessments informing licensing arrangements, spin-out commercialisation and investment planning.
  3. Project-level risk and opportunity tools to facilitate IP considerations as part of individual research projects.
  4. A "Knowledge Asset Management Toolkit" providing overarching strategic and operational KAM guidance.

The package aims to equip universities and research organisations to better understand the commercial potential of their IP and provides practical tools to support strategic decision-making around its protection and exploitation.

Early consideration of how intellectual property will be identified, protected and exploited can significantly influence the success of future commercialisation activities, including licensing, investment and spin-out opportunities. The KAM hub intends to support earlier and more informed IP decision-making, thereby enhancing the potential for successful commercialisation across the UK research sector.

If you would like to discuss the protection, management or commercialisation of intellectual property arising from research activities, please get in touch with our IP team.
