Nicola trained at Theodore Goddard (now Addleshaws) in London and worked at Mishcon de Reya and Mundays before joining Stevens & Bolton LLP in 2011 as a commercial partner and head of franchising and retail.
Nicola specialises in franchising and assisting businesses to scale up and expand through commercial exploitation of intellectual property. Her practice has a particular emphasis on advising on international expansion through franchising including direct unit franchising, master franchising and area development, as well as assisting international businesses looking to enter the UK market. Much of her work involves fashion and luxury brands as well as the casual dining sector.
Nicola speaks at numerous specialist franchise seminars and exhibitions and writes for leading trade journals such as, Franchise World, the Franchise Magazine, Elite Franchise and Drapers. She is the firm's designated representative for the British Franchise Association, and serves on the BFA’s Quality Standards Committee advising on compliance issues and the promotion of best practice in franchising. She is also a member of the American Bar Association’s Franchise Forum as well as its International Contracts Committee and is also a member of the International Bar Association and its Franchising Committee.
Nicola advised and represented the European Franchise Federation at the European IMCO workshop on "Relations between franchisors and franchisees: regulatory framework and current challenges" to discuss problems in the area of franchising and the impact of the EU rules on functioning of the franchising.
She is an acknowledged industry expert in franchising consistently ranked in the top band for franchising UK-wide by Chambers legal directory which describes her as a "an extremely capable lawyer, who is pleasant to work with and has a lot of professional integrity" as well as being "commended for her consummately commercial approach". She is also listed as a leading individual for franchising in The Legal 500, which describes her as "very personable and easy to communicate with", and her knowledge of franchising as "very evidently outstanding".
In addition, Nicola is listed in the Seventh Edition of ‘The Best Lawyers in the United Kingdom’ for her work in Franchising Law as well as the global Who’s Who in Franchising for a number of years.
