Tom studied physics as an undergraduate and wrote his dissertation on developments in Magnetic Resonance Imaging. He trained and qualified as a solicitor in the IP team at Herbert Smith in London and joined Stevens & Bolton in 2007. He became a partner in 2011.
Tom advises on all aspects of intellectual property and technology law. A qualified solicitoradvocate,
he has extensive litigation experience having represented clients in proceedings
before all levels of the UK courts; and advises established businesses, start-ups and
individuals on the protection, exploitation and management of IP and technology.
He has acted on many leading IP cases including: Markem v Zipher (patent entitlement);
Navitaire v Easyjet (copyright in graphical user interfaces); and Kerry v Bakkavor (confidential
information); and has also spent time on secondment at a major UK broadcaster and a
leading German IP litigation firm in Dusseldorf.
Tom is recognised as a leading practitioner in Chambers UK, The Legal 500, World Trademark
Review and Media Law International; as well as a UK patent and trade mark “Star” by
Managing Intellectual Property. He has written articles for many legal and industry
publications, including PLC, Legal Week, Techradar and Music Week, as well as being quoted
several times in the national press and by the BBC. He also recently appeared on Channel 4.
He is an Associate Member of CIPA; and a member of INTA, AIPPI, Union-IP and iTechLaw.
