World Cup kick-off set to boost hospitality

As the World Cup gets underway today, hospitality venues are gearing up for a significant uplift in trade, with live screenings expected to drive footfall, longer dwell time and late-night spend.

That opportunity comes with some practical property considerations. Extended licensing hours are likely to support trading during key fixtures, but operators should ensure their leases permit later opening, in case of restrictions on trading hours.

Higher volumes and late-night screenings will also increase the risk of noise and nuisance complaints — particularly in mixed-use schemes — leaving landlords to balance support for hospitality tenants with wider estate management. And while screens, outdoor seating and branding can enhance the matchday experience, even temporary installations may require landlord or third party consent.

Against that backdrop, with the right planning, the World Cup offers a timely trading boost for the sector — and a chance for landlords and tenants to work together to unlock it.

For many fans, watching together in pubs and bars is a key part of the tournament.
